The Coin Market
Some say investing in rare coins is prosperous...are they right?

Most of us are coin collectors in some way or another, whether by leaving them in the bottom of drawers, our couch cushions, or piggy banks. But what about the pros?--those who spend their time and money on this eccentric form of investing.

The normal people like us who keep coins just for fun are actually called "coin accumulators." But the pros, the real collectors, know as much about coins as we do about stocks (or more). They keep up with current coin prices, they study coins, and they spend money to add to their collection; all in the same way we do with stocks.

It's their real passion. There are millions of investors and collectors who participate in the multibillion-dollar coin industry throughout the U.S. and Canada alone.

The most simple reason for coin collecting is that coins are money, and everyone likes money. But there's a lot more to it. With the use of good coin brokers (similar to financial advisors) many investors have seen incredible returns over the last 25 years. Gains of 1000% are fairly common, and gains of several thousand percent aren't unusual. But these are rare coins, not the type we might find mixed within our pocket change.

According to David Bowers, "Kept in good condition, U.S. coins should continue a steady appreciation in value." But he added, that just like stocks, "This doesn't mean there aren't year to year price fluctuations."

Like stocks, investing in coins takes a lot of time, focus, and effort. Learning about stocks is easy because of web sites like BuckInvestor, books, and magazines. But information on the coin market is limited, and is more difficult to get into.
